Mitchell Messling, 66, was driving the vehicle westbound on West Merrick Road near the intersection of South Long Beach Avenue around 4:10 p.m., Monday, May 27, when he left the roadway and drove partially onto the sidewalk, Nassau County Police said.
Messling then drove all the way onto the sidewalk and struck two adults and an 11-year-old boy, according to police.
"The defendant was observed having glassy bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath," police said. "He was placed under arrest without further incident."
The boy was transported by Nassau County Police Aviation Helicopter 4 to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Both adult victims were transported by ambulance to area hospitals, police said.
Messling was charged with assault, vehicular assault, two count of third-degree assault, two counts of DWI, reckless endangerment, and reckless driving.
He will be arraigned on Tuesday, May 28, at First District Court, 99 Main Street in Hempstead.
